QAYG Made Modern Quilt Along – Finish it! (plus announcement!)

First of all, my apologies for posting this so late!!! If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you will have seen my progressive photos of me finishing this quilt. With Seattle’s dark weather lately, I’ve had trouble getting final pictures of this quilt, so I will have to settle with these. Sorry if it’s a little dark looking!

I wanted to thank all of you that went along on this journey for my very first quilt along! Whether you made the quilt or were following along, thank you for being here! I’ve truly enjoyed seeing everyone’s progress!

I hope you enjoy these pictures, and hopefully these (and everyone’s photos this past week!) will inspire you to make a quilt. For details on this Quilt As-You-Go (QAYG) technique, you can find my book, Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern here and here, for signed copies, or here for a kindle version. Thank you for your support!

My hope for this quilt along was to show you that quilting doesn’t have to be as daunting as it seems. You can finish a quilt from start to finish on your own, even without a ‘fancy’ sewing machine. 🙂 Also, I wanted to share with you a fun and creative technique. It’s a different way to quilt that doesn’t require a precise pattern; however, if you have a quilt pattern you can also finish it via the QAYG technique! There’s so many possibilities with this method. I hope it brings as much creativity and finished quilts to you, as it has for me.

Please share with me your finished QAYG projects! Please post them on my Facebook wall, tag me (and hashtag #quiltasyougomademodern) on instagram, or email me. I’m planning to do a blog post to share everyone’s completed quilts! Thank you!

Finally, I wanted to announce that with Thanksgiving around the corner, I have decided to auction of this quilt (plus a signed copy of my book!) on my blog. 100% of proceeds will go towards http://www.northwestharvest.org/, Washington’s statewide hunger relief agency. Please stay tuned for details!

I heartfelt thank you! And happy quilting as you go!

QAYG Quilt Along – End of Week 4

Hello! I’m so sorry I’m a day late in posting this – it’s been a crazy, busy week! To recap, Sunday marked the end of Week 4 for my Quilt As-You-Go Quilt Along! If you’re on track, then you should have all 20 of your blocks quilted! And you know what that means??? It’s time to FINISH your quilt!!! Just like that, your quilt is 80% complete. All you need to do is assemble the blocks, add backing and bind! That is what we will be doing for week 5, which technically started yesterday. 😉

If you’re not at 20 blocks yet, do not fret! I’m so happy to have you quilting along and/or following everyone’s progress. Please do share your progress with me on Facebook and/or Instagram, and be sure to hashtag #QuiltAsYouGoMadeModern – thank you!!

Goal: Yesterday (Monday, November 10th) marked the start of Week 5 for my
QAYG Quilt Along. The goal is to finish your quilt within
the next 7 days  (by Sunday, November 16).
I will be checking in on social media to see people’s progress, and will do a follow up blog post this weekend.

To finish your quilt, be sure to read “Assembling Quilt As-You-Go Blocks” in the techniques chapter of my book. There you will find two different joining methods: block-to-block or joining strips. I will most likely assemble mine via block-to-block method.

Also read the “Finish It!” chapter, along with all my little helpful tid-bits and tips. For example, you can try using quilting flannel for a super soft and cuddly backing that naturally adheres to the batting making it easy to baste. And remember, minimal basting required! (yay!). Using regular quilting cotton for the backing is fine too.

With the above being said, I will let you get to work! You will find that assembling the blocks comes together super quick.

Once again I wanted to share more awesome people’s progress from Instagram, below. Thank you ladies for letting me share your beautiful work! (If
I’ve forgotten to ask your permission to display your photo and you’d
like it taken down, just send me a message and let me know).

As we finish our quilts, please be sure to share your finished quilt with me on Facebook or Instagram (hashtag #QuiltAsYouGoMadeModern). For mylast wrap-up post, i’d love to share your quilt!

One last thing! I am finally selling copies of my book at www.QuiltingintheRain.Etsy.com. Amazon is still temporarily sold out, so if you’d like a copy that’s SIGNED by me 😉 check out my little shop. And as always, thanks for your support!

QAYG Quilt Along – End of Week 3

Today marks the end of Week 3 for my Quilt As-You-Go Quilt Along!
By this point, the goal was to have 15 blocks completed (5
blocks/week). If you’re not quite there yet, that’s okay! I’m thrilled
to have you quilting along. If you’re on track, that means you only have
5 more blocks to go!!! Only ONE week left until we assemble our (already quilted) quilts! You will LOVE how fast these Quilt As-You-Go quilts come together.

Goal: Today (Monday, November 3rd) marks the start of Week 4 for my
QAYG Quilt Along. The goal is to complete an additional 5 blocks within
the next 7 days  (by Sunday, November 9).
I will be checking in on social media to see people’s progress, and will do a follow up blog post this weekend.

How satisfying is this stack of 15 quilted blocks?! That’s what’s so
addicting about QAYG. It’s a practical and fast way to quilt. And you
don’t need a ‘fancy’ sewing machine to finish a quilt all on your own.
Working with smaller blocks is easy, creative and very forgiving. I hope
you’re all enjoying using this method! It’s not your traditional way to
quilt, but it works and there’s something to be said about being able
to make a quilt on your own, from start to finish. Good job everyone!

If you’re seeing this for the first time, you can find details about my QAYG Quilt Along from my Introduction and kickoff post to help get you started. You’re welcome to jump in at any time as I will keep this quilt along up on my blog. This quilt along is an excellent way for us to quilt together as a community and share our progress and work. It’s really been a blast seeing everyone’s progress! Check out my Facebook and Instagram for live updates and pictures on people’s progress (hashtag #QuiltAsYouGoMadeModern or tag me)!

Below is my book, Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern, available online or your local bookshop/quilt shop. 🙂 It’s temporarily out of stock on Amazon, but lots of people are finding it at Connecting Threads on sale! You can also find the e-book version here.

Good luck quilting your last 5 QAYG Quilt Along blocks! You’re almost there!!
As always, feel free to leave me a comment at any time!! Happy quilting as-you-go!

QAYG Quilt Along – End of Week 1

Hello! Last night marked the end of Week 1 for my Quilt As-You-Go Quilt Along! As mentioned last week in my QAYG Quilt Along Kickoff post, the goal was to have 5 Quilt As-You-Go (QAYG) blocks completed by yesterday. If you’ve completed your five blocks, congratulations! You are on track! No worries if you’re a little behind as this quilt along acts as a fun guide so we can all quilt together and share our work amongst our everyday, busy schedules. I have to say it’s been amazing seeing everyone’s progress!

If you’re seeing this for the first time (welcome!), you can find out details about my QAYG Quilt Along from my Introduction and kickoff post to help get you started.

Goal: Today (Monday, October 20th) marks the start of Week 2 for my QAYG Quilt Along. The goal is to complete an additional 5 blocks within the next 7 days  (by Sunday, October 26th). I will be checking in on social media to see people’s progress, and will do a follow up blog post this weekend.

In my book Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern, I have a section on ‘Squaring Up your blocks’ in the Quilt As-You-Go Techniques section. There I recommend getting yourself a 14″x14″ rotating cutting mat, which you can find at your local craft store or quilt shop, or Amazon. I like to get mine from Joanne Fabrics and use one of their 40-50% off coupons, usually found on their website.

These work great for squaring up your QAYG blocks, but will also come in handy for traditional quilting as well. See for yourself and take a look at my little video I put together (with much help from my hubby!) to see how efficient a rotating cutting mat really is:

It will make your quilting life easier, so go treat yourself! It’s one of my most used quilting tools. Also, before squaring up your blocks don’t forget to read the ‘Squaring Up the Blocks’ section in the Techniques chapter of my book for more tips on which squaring up technique to use, as well as other options if you don’t have a 12.5″ square ruler.

That being said, I will keep this post short and sweet. Good luck quilting-as-you-go your next 5 blocks! I will check back next weekend.

In the meantime, check out my Facebook and Instagram for live updates and pictures on people’s progress (hashtag #QuiltAsYouGoMadeModern or tag me)!

Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions. 🙂
