A Tour of my Humble Sewing Space

I just finished cleaning my sewing area (it RARELY looks this neat), so I thought I’d snap a few pics while it looks tidy and share my space with you.

Want to know a fun fact that’sΒ  kind of amazing? See that tiny ironing board to the left of my sewing machine? I used that little thing to press ALL of the quilts for my book. My Quilt as You Go technique really doesn’t require a lot of space.

My sewing area has changed a lot over the last few years. Before the arrival of my son, I had an entire room dedicated to it. That room became his nursery, and this smallish 7 ft x 5 ft nook became my new sewing area. I’m very happy with it – and it’s all I need.

Okay, now for some fun pictures…

I thought you all might want to see ‘some’ of my stash, so here ya go. πŸ™‚

I reupholstered this little stool from Ikea myself. You can find that post HERE.

I try to sort my fabric scraps by color. How do you all sort your scraps?

This is my happy drawer. πŸ™‚ I’ve shared it before on FB.

Every quilter needs batting! I hide my giant batting roll behind a door.Β  I love using Warm and Natural and Pellon brand. I get my rolls from Joanne Fabrics online and use one of their 40-50% off coupons.
My sewing nook is nestled in my dining room/son’s play area, so I have a little curtain (on the right) to help wall it off.
In case you’re wondering, all the furniture is from Ikea. I think I got everything for a little over $200.
As some of you already know, I do all of my cutting on the floor or on my dining room table, and tuck my large cutting mats away behind my sewing table when not in use.
Paige’s furry badonka donk is my typical cutting view:
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – not everyone has Martha’s sewing room! But the great thing is you don’t need all of that.
Let me know if you have any questions about my space. I’m happy to answer. πŸ™‚

Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing. It is a happy spot πŸ™‚ I just have a corner of the family room, but I sat down to sew last night and an hour later my aches and attitudes were so much better…sewing therapy doesn't require a big space, just a happy one, right?

Jera, I'd like to quilt in your space–colorful and efficient. Please tell me where you bought the colored plastic bins. My space needs more color, and for sure I have scraps that need bins. Thanks. wheelerdfs@yahoo.com

Hi, Jera. What a sweet space. I love it. I just found your blog this morning (great blog name, by the way), and have spent the last hour checking out your tutorials. You're a very good teacher; your tutorials are easy to follow and inspirational. I pinned your greeting card tutorial for later. What a great way to use up scraps. Love that! I'm following you with Bloglovin'. So happy I found you. Oh, and that invisible zipper pillow cover? Brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. I'm a beginner quilter and really appreciate your terrific blog. — Nancy @ A Joyful Cottage.

I love your nook – such an efficient space. I have a question about your little IKEA drawers on casters if you don’t mind. Do those drawer have metal glides? Or do they slide out wood on wood? Are the drawers sturdy? I am looking for something with lots of drawers for all the little tools I want to keep handy during sewing that will slide under my sewing table or be pulled out to use as a pressing surface.
