My Thoughts on Thread

You know that feeling when you find a really good deal that’s just too good to be true? Well that’s what prompted me to write this post. It would be selfish of me not too. So anyway, I’ll get right to it.

Here’s my little ‘secret’ for those of you that aren’t in ‘the know’ yet… 🙂 My favorite thread is Essential Thread Spools by Connecting Threads. They have excellent colors to choose from and the quality is amazing. Best of all, you get 1,200 yards per spool for only $2.49 each.

When I used to have my quilting frame setup, I bought their 5,000 yard cones which works great for long arm machines as well. I have a neutral colored thread cone that I rarely need to move from my big machine because it’s great for piecing and quilting. You can only find this thread online, but shipping is inexpensive or free if you spend 50.

That’s pretty much it. If you’re a fan of Gutermann and Mettler thread, the quality of this stuff is very  comparable. I’ve been using this thread for the last 5 years and I love it. Hope this post sheds some light on your always-running-out-of-thread-woes. 🙂

I bought my first roll when I ordered batting during their sale, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I hope it's as good as what I use now because the price is unbeatable. Thanks!

Oh how I wish my machine liked this thread. I got 2 and tried and tried and it just kept messing with my tension. I LOVE the thread, but machine does NOT. Lots of people like it though!

I LOVE Connecting Threads Essential. I wish they made it in a lighter weight though, because it is a very thick thread.

I love their thread too! I always forget to order before I run out and end up getting Guterman because I can get it local.

Thanks for sharing your thread source:) I'm going to get some–I'm always running out of basic colors and for some reason, it always surprises me.

Thank you for the great tip. I wanted to also thank you for inspiring me in my quilting. I am a new quilter, and am actually working on my 2nd quilt inspired by your Strawberry Fields Forever quilt! I fell in love with it from the moment I first saw it. It's fun and crazy and I can't wait to see it finished!

      Hello Kimberly,
Where can I find that Strwberry Fields quilt information?

I discovered their thread about a year ago and purchased 3 thread "collections" they were discontinuing. I love this thread and got some really gorgeous colors. I also buy all of my neutral threads for piecing from Connecting Threads. You just can't beat the price & quality!

I use this thread almost eclusively too. Love it though it does produce a bit much lint and I have to be good about cleaning more often.

I have the same pfaff machine and frame that you have. I notice you've been quilting without the frame. Do you still have it? I just purchased and set mine up and find the whole process a bit overwhelming. If it wasn't for my husband, I would have never gotten my practice quilt in the frame. Do you prefer the frame or not?

Hi – I no longer have the frame. I sold it about a year ago. It was definitely overwhelming at first and just like you, I couldn't have done it without the help of my husband! Once put together, it was a bot daunting to get started quilting – my husband had to keep encouraging me to use. It still took some time setting everything up on the frame, but once that was done the quilting was a lot of fun. The main reason I got rid of it was to make room for my son's room once we found out i was expecting. I guess my advice would be to just keep using it as much as possible, and you'll get the hang of it. Good luck!

I've been using their thread since I read your post. It is great quality and such a great deal. A couple of weeks ago I took advantage of a close out sale and ordered a bunch of beautiful colors for a mere $1.67/spool.

I’m going to have to try this. It’s about 90% cheaper than what I’ve been using. I just bought you QAYG made vintage and I’m super excited about starting some projects. Really loved reading the book.
