My New Cutting Table!

photo-oct-12-1-02-05-pm

I had to write a quick post to share my very FIRST cutting table ever! Who knew a potting bench could make a perfect cutting table?! For those of you who have been following me for a while, you may recognize photos similar to the following where I used to do all of my fabric cutting on the floor:

Alas, no more Paige butts on my cutting mat! (no offense Paige)

My new cutting view…ta-dahh!

My new cutting table is a sturdy potting bench made of reclaimed cedar fencing.

I was looking on my local Craiglist and stumbled upon some awesome potting benches that eventually led me to this website: http://fenceboardfurniture.com/

I contacted Harold, the owner, and asked if he could make me a potting bench that was at least 28″ deep (to fit my cutting mat) and 35-36″ high, which is a good cutting height for me while standing. If you look at his website, he has so many fun potting benches to choose from! Harold custom made me this bench within a week and delivered it (from Lakewood, WA to Seattle, WA) for $200 total. An amazing deal! The surface of the bench was sanded to be smooth and leveled, perfect for my cutting mat. I highly recommend ordering a potting bench from Harold if you happen to be in Washington.  He was quick, the workmanship is very high quality and sturdy, he rounded all the corners leaving no jagged edges, and it was no doubt worth the money. Harold is also up for the challenge if you have something custom in mind. I am a very happy customer!

Here it is when it first arrived…it felt massive in our living room but my husband and I were able to maneuver it into my sewing room, thank goodness!

I really like how this cutting table keeps all my sharp cutting tools high up and away from my little ones.

It has a nice top shelf for displaying my antiquey stuff. 🙂 I hope to eventually decorate the wall behind it with some vintage dishes.

Here’s a side view. The depth overall is about 30″.

I couldn’t end this post without a peek at my stash 🙂

And here’s the other side of my sewing room.  I use a Pfaff Grand Quilter – it has no bells and wistles, just simple straight stitching.  I’ve had it for about 10 years now and it’s a work horse. In other words, I LOVE it. To the left of it is my fabric collection, High Tea. 🙂 I will need to make room for collection #2 soon! 🙂

oh yes, and those are my boyz…

Say hello to Daryl, Jamie and Jax. Their favorite pass time is to watch me sew, obviously. And as you can see, they take guarding my stash quite seriously.

Anyway, that’s it for now. I promised to share details of my new cutting table after I shared a photo of it on Instagram. Let me know if you have any questions. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by!

I love, love. LOVE it!! That is my kind of cutting table and style. I would order one in a heartbeat if I wasn’t on the east coast! Lucky you. I just can’t believe you were cutting on the floor! Your poor back and knees. This must be quite the luxury for you now!

This is fantastic and I decorate between vintage and country. However, whoa is me, I live in Kentucky. I thought Daryl, Jami and Jax might be protecting you from the dreaded stash stealers. I know I seem to be unable to find some pieces I know I had here. But then my protectors aren’t armed either.

Clearly, Harold is a wonderful craftsman. The ends of each board on the work surface are so even and the corners are beautifully rounded. In my younger years my mother and I used to cut out T-shirts on the floor so I know how uncomfortable that location can be. Congrats on having a great new cutting location.

Its wonderful and I love it!!! What an awesome idea! My favorite is the shelf on the top and the little wooden “basket” for storing things. Oh and the storage on the bottom. How gorgeous it is! And your fabric…. sigh.

P.S. Are you left handed? I notice that your cutting mat is completely opposite the way I cut… so I started thinking that maybe I cut opposite but there is not way I could cut with the 1 inch mark on the left! It has to be on the right for me! But maybe I’m backwards in my brain! 🙂

Hello! I am right-handed, but i’ve cut using the measurements on my ruler rather than the mat. I just use the mat to help line up my ruler. Funny how everyone cuts differently! 🙂 Thanks for your comment!

Oh sew cute! Love the look & goes great with that vintage feel. Also, I’m envious of all those bolts of your gorgeous fabric. I just got a layer cake & some yardage of High Tea. Can’t wait to start sewing with it! And you’ve got some great guyz looking after you. Be still my heart Jax. Where’d you get them?

Dear Jera, I love your new cutting table. I think there might be a bit of sadness for Paige…. You might want to make her a fancy stool to sit on haha

I would like to know what your sewing machine is?
Thank you for always sharing your creativity

the table will make cutting so much easier for you, I use the kitchen table but would love a taller one, make life easier and my back would appreciate it.

What a fine site to visit. I love your stuff. What is the name of your book and where can I get One. I work with students who are in an alternative environment and I quilt with them, it is fun finding something new.
    Thanks
    Ramona
